A cautionary tale. A portent of doom. A lesson. A boast. A threat.

“The Rains of Castamere”, created by George R.R. Martin for his A Song of Ice and Fire novels, tells the story of Tywin Lannister's victory in the Reyne Rebellion, a violent uprising against House Lannister by House Reyne and House Tarbeck of the Westerlands.

As described by Martin (both directly and via the song’s lyrics), Tywin Lannister’s victory over the rebels is ruthless, savage, and total: he burns their houses to the ground, razes their land, and puts every living member of the mutinous houses –young and old alike– to death, displaying their corpses on the gates of Casterly Rock.

German composer Ramin Djawadi (whose score for A Song of Ice and Fire’s television adaptation, Game of Thrones, often accompanies Martin’s pre-existing lyrics) perfectly captures the tale’s chilling, bleak sentiment, with a melody as haunting and unforgettable as the story itself.
